Denison Dam Spillway and Lake Lewisville Spillway pics

As water levels threaten to overflow the spillway at Denison Dam, media and onlookers wait for the fateful moment with camera in hand. Our main forum, Lake Pirates Forum, features aerial photographs of the Denison Dam spillway as well as aerial pictures of all the main marinas, restaurants and clubs and roads. Thanks to members such as StewartM, Catfish, Texoma Ghost, BB, Thumper and a host of others we have an amazing collection of pics such as Highport Marina under water, The American legion submerged by flood, bridges being crossed by the rising water and marinas completely cut off from land.

Pictures have been posted of Lake Texoma, Lake Lewisville, Lake Lavon, Lake Ray Hubbard, and all the major lakes in North Texas and Southern Oklahoma. Our members (although stunned by the flooding at such an enormous measure) have kept a meticulously archived picture record of the rising waters a month ago, to the overflowing spillways today.

It's no secret that most lakes have been closed and most boat ramps have been shut down effectively ending the Summer for most area boaters. Our fortuitous members are constantly (and painstakingly) researching all available boat ramps in the N.Texas and S. Oklahoma area and keeping us informed as to what lakes are still available and what boat ramps are open to the public.

For more information about available boat ramps and open lakes visit our forums located on the left hand menu. Register and instantly talk with experience boaters who can keep you in the know as to where to boat safely on area lakes. Boat Safely.

Threads to watch are "Aerial pics of Texas Lakes", "Lake Texoma Lake Levels", "Grapevine Lake on the 4th", "Swampano's", "Denison Dam Spillway pics", and many more.

Flash Gordon Memorial Poker Run

Sometimes you write an article because it's simply news worthy. Sometimes you write an article because it is sensational. Sometimes you write an article because it is the right thing to do. This article, is the right thing to do.

On September 2nd, 2006, a tragic accident during the "Big Gun's Poker Run" on Lake Texoma took the lives of Gordon Mineo, 61, his wife Ann ,59, Amy Dawn Lane, 31, and Justin R. Lane, 25, Their Goddaughter and her husband. Also regrettably deceased was Myra L. Gibson, 51, loving wife of Bruce Gibson, 54, who survived the accident with serious injuries.

This tragedy shook up the world of powerboating and Poker Runs [both offshore and inland] and will affect the practices and thoughts of thousands of pleasure boaters touched by the mishap for years to come. The Gibson's (owners of the Nashville Catz) and the Mineo's (owners of Flash Gordon) were emphatic about boating safety and will be remembered as examples of good will and professionalism in the sport we love.

Gordon Mineo was the organizer of the Highroller Poker Run, The Big Guns Poker Run, Hillbilly Hold 'Em, and many other runs and events around the country. His contribution to the sport here on Lake Texoma alone is felt through three generations of boaters. He and Ann's contribution to the sport across this country... immeasurable. There is a vacant spot in our hearts for the awesome whine of those turbines and the big grin of Gordon Mineo as he maneuvered his unmistakeable yellow cat through the boat traffic at Highport Marina. This time of year it is doubly hard to look across the lake and know you will never see the Flash Gordon roaring by again. Sad indeed.

Although Gordon's name is curiously missing from the pages of Marina websites and newsletters that he helped to popularize his friends and family have not forgotten what his presence meant then, and still means today.

Donnie Fulmer was Gordon's go-to man for the "Hillbilly Hold 'Em Poker Run" on Lake Ouachita in Arkansas, and a friend of Gordon and all the Mineo's for years. Dave and Kelly York were also long time friends of Gordon Mineo's and worked closely with him administratively on most of his events. Together these talented people have worked tirelessly to justly memorialize Flash Gordon in the first annual "Flash Gordon Memorial Poker Run" to be held on Lake Ouchita, Arkansas May 18 - 20, 2007.

This event will be held at Mountain Harbor Resort and Spa in Mount Ida, Arkansas on beautiful Lake Ouachita. As a charity event a generous portion of the proceeds will be distributed between The Volunteer Fire Department in Joplin, and the Humane Society. I'm sure Gordon and Ann would be pleased.

News of this event has spread among the boating community and what would normally be a 30-40 boat event is expected to attract a 100 plus boats from the "Superman" MTI to local bass boats.

Donnie and all of us express our deepest gratitude to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Lake Ouichita for their cooperation in permitting this event. Also contributor's such as , Legend Marine Group, Donzi Marine, Cigarette Powerboats, American Signs and Graphics, and many more are helping to make this event one of the season's highlights.

Mr. Fulmer has implemented some of the best ideas in boating safety to help make this one of the safest events I have ever heard of. Of course, life jackets will be mandatory, but Donnie has even more groundbreaking ideas. The boats will be lined up according to power putting the fastest boats up front and the slower boats to the rear eliminating dangerous passes. Each run will also be led by a pace boat. Once all the participants have reached the first leg of the event, then, and only then, will the pace boat restart all entries for the next leg. This will create bountiful comraderie as the faster boats wait for the other entrants to arrive. Everyone will have a chance to meet one another in this relaxed phase of the event. There will also be rescue boats on hand for all legs of the event in the unlikely case they are needed.

To add more excitement to the event and provide a "being there" experience for us unable to attend Boatpix.com is providing a helicopter for the duration of the event.

Camping, RV, and Hotel Accomodations are available at Brady Mountain Resort, The Crystal Inn, Mount Harbor Resort and the Joplin Campgrounds. For more information, contact Donnie Fulmer at 501-804-9084. Registration Friday, 18 May. Poker run starts mid-morning from Mountain Harbor's marina on Saturday, 19th May.

Donnie, the York's, and myself urge you to attend and make this a day to remember, for a family we'll never forget.

Settlement reached in Lake Lewisville stump case

Exclusive: Settlement reached in tree stump case 11:19 AM CDT

11:27 AM CDT on Thursday, April 19, 2007
By STELLA M. CHÁVEZ / The Dallas Morning News
schavez @ dallasnews.com

VERNON BRYANT / DMN
Floating lumber has been a common sight in an area of Lewisville Lake near Hickory Creek since trees were cut down in January 2006. A Double Oak developer has agreed to pay a $630,000 settlement to the U.S. government for damage caused by the removal of thousands of trees on federal property at Lewisville Lake.

A federal official said it’s believed to be the largest such settlement in the region.

Frank Kerr and Kerr Real Estate Inc. deny any wrongdoing but have agreed to pay the settlement to move forward with their planned development around the lake, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“It provides money to repair damage to the habitat and sends a message to property owners or anyone else around the lake that if they damage property, they will have to pay for it,” said Kevin McClendon, an assistant U.S. attorney.

Mr. Kerr referred comment to his attorney. His attorney could not be reached for comment.

In January 2006, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers discovered about 4,000 trees had been cut down with a chain saw. It’s believed the standing timber, which was then in a dry lake bed, was destroyed around that time or as early as December 2005.

The damaged area covers about 83 acres and is just south of the site of Mr. Kerr’s planned subdivision in Corinth. The missing trees were discovered around the time that Kerr Real Estate Inc. began major work on the development, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The settlement follows more than a yearlong investigation by the Corps, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division and U.S. Attorney’s Office.

In the agreement, the government contends that Mr. Kerr and his company cut standing timber from the dry lake bed, cleared driftwood from the shoreline on Corps land and created storm water drainage that violated regulations and damaged Corps property in the process of creating their development.

Mr. McClendon said proof of the damage was circumstantial, and that’s why the federal government pursued a civil case. A criminal case required a higher standard of proof. In cases like this, however, a criminal prosecution could have resulted in a minimal jail sentence or a smaller fine.

He added that the agreement does not prevent the government from criminally prosecuting other individuals.

Denton Record-Chronicle
Frank Kerr, shown at the proposed development site in 2005. As part of the agreement, Mr. Kerr and Kerr Real Estate Inc. have agreed to make storm water drainage improvements to ensure that water runoff from the new development won’t cause any problems or damage the Corps’ property and the lake.

In addition, Kerr Real Estate Inc. has granted an easement to the city of Corinth for the public to use as a walking, hiking or horse trail.

Corinth City Council member Shannon Bryan said she was pleased to see the case resolved.

“It was pretty catastrophic to members of this community,” she said, noting that the city will be watching the development closely. “We’re going to be very cautious about what happens to this development.”

Michael Bristow, who owns North Texas Fiberglass Boat Repair, said that he and area anglers had been anxiously awaiting the results of the investigation.

Numerous anglers have been vocal on local online fishing forums, posting their theories about the missing trees and demanding repercussions for the culprit. He and others say they want to make sure the money from the settlement goes directly back to the lake.

“The timber that was cut and downed is crucial to the survival to the future of the lake,” Mr. Bristow said.
